The season turned on two penalty kicks. At South Bend in November, Missouri led 22nd-ranked Notre Dame 26–10 at half-time and was still ahead with the clock dead before conceding a penalty at the death and losing 32–31. It was the second last-second penalty-kick defeat of the year.
The spring was better. Kansas were beaten 26–10 in Columbia, with the second side winning as well; freshman Joe Maxwell scored twice on his first A-side start and Shane Glascott ran 95 meters for a try off a Kansas knock-on. A week later a disputed penalty with no time left let Arkansas draw 24–24 — Missouri had scored four tries to three. Truman State were then put away 71–12 with only twenty players available over Spring Break.
At the Heart of America sevens championship in Lawrence, Missouri beat Kansas, Iowa State and Kansas State before losing the final to Arkansas 14–10 in what Corwin called one of the most closely contested matches he had witnessed in 35 years in the sport. The squad of twelve carried six freshmen.
