A four-match winning run through the conference — Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Truman State on the turf at Stokes Stadium in Kirksville, and Kansas in Lawrence — carried Missouri into the national Round of 16 at Bowling Green, Ohio.
There the Tigers took apart Middle Tennessee State 46–10 in a tie Rugby Mag had called a toss-up. “Nobody expected us to dominate them,” coach Don Corwin wrote. The regional final against the host side the next afternoon was a step too far: outsized and facing a deeper squad, Missouri went out one match short of the Final Four at Stanford. The bus pulled back into Columbia at two in the morning after a nine-and-a-half-hour ride through storms across Indiana and Illinois.
