The 1985–86 Season

Match results recovered from the Mizzou Rugby Old Boys archive.

Missouri traveled to Omaha and came home with the tournament. Two teammates confirmed it independently years later — Steve Kaufmann remembered winning it, and David Dalton named the season: “Fall of 85. Definitely Omaha tournament.” The Omaha Rugby Festival was a spring fixture, though: the club’s own program for the sixteenth running of it is dated April 9–10, 1988, and is kept on the 1987–88 page. The title is therefore recorded here as the spring of 1986 — the other half of the season Dalton named. No scores from the weekend have survived.

It was a small, hard side. “'83 or so we had the smallest pack you have ever seen,” Michael McManus recalled. “One guy weighed over 200. Basically gave the other team every scrum and just peeled off and played defense.” Kevin Hindes played at No. 8, with David Dalton taking over the shirt after Hindes left.
