Westerns in Dallas · Coach Ian Hermann’s Final Season · Record Unknown
A trip to Dallas, the end of a coaching era, and a night on Rosemary Avenue nobody forgot.
That fall, we traveled to Dallas to compete in Westerns, although the rugby itself was probably less memorable than everything surrounding the trip. I don’t think we won a match all weekend. Baniak’s dad drove us down, and the team crashed at the Mastroianni family house. It was also the end of an era for Mizzou Rugby, as this would be Coach Ian Hermann’s final season with the club.
That season also produced one of the crazier stories in Mizzou Rugby history. At a house party on Rosemary Avenue, Matt “Jesus” Berenc and Richard Mastro were both stabbed. Amazingly, Rich was back on the rugby pitch only a week or two later. Coach fashioned and sewed a protective pad directly into Rich’s jersey so he could play—a story that pretty well captures the toughness, ingenuity, and occasional insanity of Mizzou Rugby in those days.
