Kansas City Collegiate & Langenberg Cup Champions · Western Championship semi-finalists

The 1991–92 Season: Kansas City Collegiate and Langenberg Cup Champions

Two trophies in one spring — five wins in two days at Swope Park, the Missouri union’s collegiate cup, and a semi-final at the Western championships.

Missouri won the fourth annual Kansas City RFC Collegiate Invitational at Swope Park on April 4–5, 1992, beating Kansas 37–24 in the championship match. The field had expanded to eleven teams that year, split into three round-robin pools, and the Tigers swept their pool on Saturday before coming through the championship bracket on Sunday. The squad carried six freshmen, two sophomores and three juniors.

Flanker Rob Hoens was named the tournament's most valuable player, scoring two tries in the final and seven across the weekend. Mark Blaine captained the side. The final produced nine tries and 61 points, with John Tajkowski converting five in a row, and Dennis Richard of the Heart of America society refereeing.

Swope Park was not the only trophy that spring. Missouri also won the Langenberg Cup, the Missouri Rugby Football Union's collegiate championship, and the cup carried the Tigers into the Western championships at Kansas on the weekend of April 18–19. There the run ended. Missouri went out in the semi-finals to the Air Force Academy in a match played in heavy mud. Scores from that weekend have not reached the archive — if you played in it, we would like to hear from you.
