Voices of the Season

“We had a superb feeling after we beat Kansas for the first time in five years last season.”

Scrum half Donny Grace, asked for his most satisfying athletic experience, The Maneater, November 8, 1983

This is the only 1982–83 result to reach us so far: a win over Kansas, the club’s first since about 1977. No score has survived. Were you there? Tell us below.

From the Archives: The Bumper Stickers

A folder of club bumper stickers from the early 1980s, kept in the scrapbook and scanned in 2026.

Every rugby club of the era ran on bumper stickers, and Missouri kept a folder of them. Two carry dates, which is why they are filed here: one advertises a tournament at Rolla on March 26–27, 1983, and another, partly torn, reads “SMUURT ’84”. The rest are the jokes the whole sport was telling in the 1980s. You will find a few of them scattered around this site.

Two rugby bumper stickers on a manila folder: Rugby Elegant Violence, and In Rugby there are no winners only Survivors
“Rugby — Elegant Violence” and “In RUGBY there are no winners, only SURVIVORS!” The folder tab is marked “Merlite” in pen.
Two rugby bumper stickers: I'd rather play rugby and lose than win in softball, and a tournament sticker for Rolla, Missouri, March 26-27 1983
“I’d rather play rugby and lose than win in softball”, and the dated one: “…by day, score by night — M.I.I.R.T., March 26–27, 1983, Rolla, Mo.” The first word and the sticker’s edges are lost off the side of the scan.
Rugby bumper stickers: Support your local hooker play rugby, Be kind to animals kiss a rugby player, and a partly hidden black and gold sticker reading SMUURT 84
“Support your local hooker — play rugby” in black and gold, “Be kind to animals — kiss a rugby player”, and underneath them a third sticker mostly hidden by the other two, ending “SMUURT ’84” — that one is filed on the 1983–84 page, still unidentified. If you know what tournament it was, tell us.
